Toronto 2012: Canada's VVS Films Acquires 'Spring Breakers' - Hollywood Reporter

TORONTO - Canadian distributor VVS Films has acquired all Canadian rights to Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, which stars James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens.

The Canadian distribution deal follows the risqué film about one-time Disney girls gone wild receiving a North American premiere last week in Toronto after a Venice bow.

The deal was negotiated by Harry Grivakis for VVS Films, and Ted Field and Mike Weber for Radar Pictures.

Annapurna Pictures earlier picked up the U.S rights to Spring Breakers, which is set for a 2013 release.

VVS Films also picked up the Canadian rights to Red Granite Pictures and Mandalay Pictures’ Horn, directed by Alexandre Aja, and David Grovic’s crime thriller Motel, which stars John Cusack and Robert DeNiro.

WHO WERE THE BIGGEST JOKESTERS BEHIND-THE-SCENES?

Another former Disney star with a naughty side?

High School Musical‘s Vanessa Hudgens, 23, and her castmates of Spring Breakers â€" Pretty Little Liars’ Ashley Benson, 22, and “Love You Like a Love Song” singer Selena Gomez, 20, â€" have been teasing us for months with bikini pics, but what exactly has been going on behind-the-scenes?

Celebuzz caught up with the young starlet at Variety‘s 6th Annual Power of Youth event on Saturday and had to ask:

Who was the biggest jokester on the set of Spring Breakers?

At first Hudgens hesitated on spilling the juice, but then she confessed (giggling):

“Probably me and Ashley [Benson].”

In case you don’t already know, Spring Breakers is her upcoming flick â€"  alongside the aforementioned Hollywood stunners and Freaks and Geeks actor James Franco â€" about four college girls and the trouble they get into after robbing a restaurant, just for the sake of having an awesome spring break.

Scandal, sass, and sex appeal. Something to definitely keep an eye peeled for â€" hitting theaters in 2013.

But Hudgens’ character in the film is not to be confused with her real-life persona.

The girlfriend of actor Austin Butler, 21, showed her philanthropic side at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, Calif. â€" representing Make-a-Wish Organization at the Power of Youth event.

With great pride, she explained, “they grant children wishes who have life-threatening medical conditions.”

‘I love it,” she gushed.

Vanessa Hudgens signed on for 'Spring Breakers' to work with James Franco - FansShare

Vanessa Hudgens has, over the recent years, been trying to prove herself as an actress - she has increasingly taken on a diverse slate of roles, with different levels of success.  After becoming a global household name with the High School Musical franchise, Hudgens has dealt with an image make-over.  Once she has shed her Disney image, she has been taking on more adult roles, but roles with depth and in good movies (although she balances it with movies such as Beastly and Bandslam.  Her most recent undertaking has been 'Spring Breakers', which she co-stars with another Disney actress, Selena Gomez.

When Hudgens is asked about preparing for the role for the Upcoming.co.uk, she replies "It starts, honestly, just reading the script. One of the first things we did was to get close to the girls right away, because we wanted to build an amazing bond and relationship, and create a sense that we had known each other for years. And then go further past that, of course, and study girls who are just hard and rough and tough and who are in this other drug-like world. It really is a completely different world; their headspaces are so different. They’re just living in the moment."

Hudgens also talks about signing on to play 'Spring Breakers' because of wanting to work with James Franco. Of signing on for the movie, she says "I think James Franco was already attached, and then I read the script and I’m such a big fan of his. I’m a real believer in putting things out in the universe, and eventually if you want it bad enough it all happens. For months I was saying, I want to work with James Franco over and over again, and when this came up, I thought “We need to make this happen!”"

Vanessa Hudgens is making it abundantly clear: she’s not in High School anymore.

The former teen star is shedding her squeaky-clean High School Musical image with every move she makes. First, there were those topless pictures. (OK, maybe that wasn’t exactly in the game plan.) Then came the role as a stripper in the icy, upcoming thriller Frozen Ground. And now she’s appearing in a sultry photo spread in The Untitled Magazine. And we’re not being ambiguous: that’s the actual name of the mag.

She rocks some seriously smoky eye makeup on the magazine’s cover, as she alluringly bites her finger. And, of course, nothing says “I’m a grown-up now!” like black nail polish.

Inside the issue, the 23-year-old reveals her mindset as a maturing actress.

“High School Musical was incredible, and it was so fun, and it gave me so many fans, which I’m very, very thankful for; but it also closed people’s minds up as to which characters I could portray,” she says. “So, for a while, I was kind of struggling and fighting for these roles that I just desperately wanted. [...] Definitely crossing over and being able to tackle these grittier parts was a challenge, but I feel like I’ve done it! It’s a whole new chapter!”

Will audiences embrace Vanessa’s sexy second act? We’ll know once she twirls around the stripper pole in Frozen Ground, opening November 30.
